The method immediately made sense to me when I read about it and watched the free videos. My horse Skelly is an ex racehorse who has been retrained to do dressage. He has a very sweet nature and is generally “well behaved” but he can get wound up very easily! For 14 years his default answer to anything frightening has been to run away. He thinks this has served him well!
The more I get into the training in a way it gets more difficult. I suppose changing the habit built up over 14 years will take some time. We are doing well on most things but the carrier bag on a stick is the devil himself as far as Skelly thinks!
I am really enjoying the TRT method and all the extra videos are very helpful for the specific problems I have encountered. It really brings you up close to your horse. Looking into his eyes and watching every reaction teaches you so much about how he thinks and how he responds and learns from you.
Initially I just wanted to be able to get on without anyone having to hold him. Also to try and help with his sudden spooks! When I’m working with the TRT method, I sometimes get comments like “you’ll be doing handy pony”! I explain that’s it’s not desensitisation, but teaching the horse how to respond through relaxation. Other people have also noticed a difference in his general demeanour!
